Chapter 12

The man who had been looking their way greeted Sarah and then shifted to the side to make room for her. Millie watched for a moment and noticed Sarah’s lips weren’t moving. Instead, she was smiling and nodding. “You got this,” she whispered under her breath.

Her first stop was to inspect the goodies which had been set out for the group. There were bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, pulled pork sliders, mini fruit skewers with ripe red strawberries, wedges of pineapple, green grapes and plump blueberries. The sweet treats were single-serving black forest dessert cups with layers of chocolate cake crumble and whipped cream, topped with a layer of cherries.

Millie taste-tested a bacon appetizer before making her rounds.

One group, in particular, stood out, and Millie could see they weren’t talking to each other. Reading their body language, several struck her as uncomfortable. Before hosting the crewmember’s get-together, she’d searched online for icebreaker games and had come across one she’d been looking forward to trying out.

She grabbed a spare roll of toilet paper from the back and approached the group. “Good morning, everyone. Are you enjoying your cruise so far?”

Millie received a lackluster response and knew she’d picked the perfect group for her game. She handed the roll to the woman to her right. “We’re going to play a quick game. I want you to take as many sheets of toilet paper that you think you’ll need and then hand the roll to the person next to you, who will do the same, passing it on until everyone has taken some sheets.”

She waited while the roll of toilet paper made its rounds. Some took several sheets, while others took only a few. One male participant took a single sheet, and Millie suspected he had played the game before.

After the roll made its rounds and was returned to her, she turned to the woman she’d started with. “How many sheets do you have?”

The young woman counted the sheets. “Six.”

“Six sheets means you get to share six things about yourself with us.”

The woman rapidly blinked as she stared at Millie. “Six?”

“Yes. The number of sheets you took.”

“I...well. My name is Elizabeth. I’m on this cruise with my mum. I detest black pudding.”

Her answer got a few chuckles.

She continued. “I love to dance. I can’t wait to visit Dublin, and my favorite holiday is Christmas.”

“Thank you, Elizabeth. I love Christmas too.” Millie pointed to the man next to her. “How many sheets do you have?”

“Eight.”

“Tell us eight things about yourself.”

“I hate black pudding too.” The young man rattled off some things about himself, and by the time the third person in the group began, everyone was smiling. The game ended, and the others barely noticed as Millie slipped away.

She played the game with another group and then wandered over to the one Sarah had joined. “Thank you for joining us this morning.” The group made small talk with Millie, and Sarah chimed in once.

Millie winked at her as she stepped away to find a quiet corner to check her phone.
